Both are listed as six-year, 360-credit programs. The same page warns that tuition fees are set annually and can change with university approval.

That last sentence matters. A Canadian family should not treat one year's tuition page as a permanent six-year contract. Use the current year as the budget anchor, then add a buffer for fee changes, exchange-rate movement, and expenses that do not appear in the tuition table.

What belongs in cost of attendance

A real cost-of-attendance estimate includes tuition, application fees, document legalization or authentication where needed, translations, medical certificates, passport renewal if needed, courier costs, visa application steps, travel insurance, flight, first rent, rental deposit, local transport, food, phone data, and emergency buffer.

It should also include timing costs. If a student waits too long, they may pay rush fees for documents, choose worse housing, or travel at a higher price. A lower tuition route can become stressful if the student does not plan the expensive weeks: application upload, acceptance confirmation, visa filing, arrival, and residence permit setup.

Use Canada benchmarks carefully

Canadian comparisons should be precise. The better comparison is structural: Canadian professional routes usually require undergraduate years before professional school, while the Romanian route can be a six-year medical or dental program after high school if the file is accepted.

Document costs are not optional details

Document work can affect both money and deadlines. Study in Romania describes the non-EU admission route as involving an application dossier, prior diplomas/documents certified or legalized by relevant authorities, financial planning, accommodation, and visa. Global Affairs Canada explains that authentication or apostille may be required before a Canadian document can be used abroad.

This does not mean every Canadian document follows the same path. Provinces and document types differ. The practical budget rule is simple: assume document work will cost time and money, then verify the exact requirement for your province, document type, target university, and visa file.

Visa and arrival create a second budget phase

Study in Romania explains that Romanian long-stay D-type visas can be extended by residence permit after entry, and that visa applications use the e-VISA portal. That means the student should separate three budgets: admission budget, visa budget, and arrival budget.

The arrival budget is where many families undercount. Housing deposits, first-month rent, temporary accommodation, local transport, SIM or eSIM, document copies, residence-permit preparation, groceries, and emergency cash all happen before the student feels settled. If the budget only covers tuition, the first month can feel much more expensive than expected.

A safer budget model for families

Use a three-column sheet: confirmed official costs, likely route costs, and buffer. Confirmed official costs are tuition and any listed university fees. Likely route costs are translations, authentication or apostille, visa, flights, insurance, and housing setup. Buffer covers exchange rates, delays, replacement documents, and first-month unknowns.

This model is not flashy, but it is how you avoid being surprised. The student can still compare Romania with Canada, Ireland, Poland, or Caribbean routes, but the comparison becomes honest: total route cost, not a headline tuition number.
